South African health experts are calling for Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) to protect consumers from the growing health risks linked to ultra-processed foods. In this eTV News interview, Angelika Grimbeek, Policy and Programme Manager at HEALA, explains how affordability — not nutrition — often determines what ends up on our plates. Ultra-processed foods now account for around 40% of daily calorie intake among low-income South African adults, while only a small fraction meet WHO recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption. This has fuelled a dangerous “fat and hungry” paradox, where obesity and malnutrition exist side by side. Common foods like bacon, hot dogs and ham — everyday staples in many households — are contributing to serious, preventable health conditions. Front-of-Pack Labelling provides clear, visible warnings that help people make informed choices and holds the food industry accountable. 📺 Watch the full interview on eTV News:SA experts call for warning labels on common, carcinogenic food products #FOPL #PublicHealth #FoodPolicy #HealthAdvocacy #UltraProcessedFoods #RightToKnow #SouthAfrica
