Professor Cas Mudde is the Stanley Wade Shelton UGAF Professor of International Affairs at the University of Georgia. Mudde is known for his expertise on populism. We asked him what the impact of far-right parties could be on the future European Parliament. He said that he does not think they will be influential unless they act in a more co-ordinated way. He says that Europe can combat populism by strengthening liberal democracy. In particular, he believes that we have to explain the value of protecting the rights of minorities. Asked how the media and mainstream parties should react to the result, he says that journalists shouldn’t put out a script they have already written about the centre crumbling. He said that mainstream parties all need to clean up their act, each one has parties that contravene their core values.
