This abandoned mine is one of dozens left behind from WWII where they mined Quicksilver, also called Mercury or Cinabar which was used for manufacturing ammunition during the war. The areas are considered toxic, unfit for prolonged human contact, because of the way these mines were operated. Miners had a shortened lifespan due to the unsafe conditions that prevailed back then. This mine is inside the Big Bend Ranch State Park, accessible normally only by hiking or riding a mountain bike on the trails. However, we were granted special authorization that weekend to drive in to the area, using back roads, and permission to fly our drones in limited areas near the primary road.
