Darwaza - the gates of hell or the door to the devil's underworld
A crater with burning natural gas with a diameter of approximately 60 meters and a depth of about 20 meters in Karakum, 90 km from the village of Erbent in the Dashoguz province of Turkmenistan. Locals and travelers call it the "Door to Hell" or "Gates of Hell." In 2004, the settlement of Darvaza was liquidated by the decision of the President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov. In 2013, by presidential decree, a state nature reserve was established in the Karakum Desert, including the Darvaza crater.
