In October 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the United States Navy faced a dangerous crisis. Japanese battleships were advancing through Surigao Strait toward the American invasion fleet at Leyte. Thousands of troops and dozens of vulnerable transport ships depended on the Navy to stop them. But the fastest and most modern American battleships had already sailed north. What remained to block the Japanese advance were older battleships—many of them survivors of Pearl Harbor. Ships like USS West Virginia, USS Maryland, USS California, and USS Tennessee had been rebuilt after the devastating attack in 1941. They were slower than modern battleships and built for a different era of naval warfare. Yet those old warships now carried something their designers never imagined: radar-directed fire control. As Japanese Admiral Nishimura pushed north with battleships Yamashiro and Fuso, American destroyers launched torpedo attacks while Oldendorf’s battle line waited across the strait. When radar locked onto the targets in the darkness, six American battleships opened fire. The result was the last battleship-versus-battleship battle in naval history. This is the story of Surigao Strait—and how rebuilt Pearl Harbor battleships delivered one of the most decisive surface victories of World War II.
