So why should you transcribe jazz solos? If you're looking to improve your ability to improvise over chord changes, it might be the most useful tool ever. If I could only ever give you one piece of advice for learning to be a better jazz musician, it would be transcription. Train your ear, find the music you love, and learn the absolute heck out of it by transcribing it and playing along to the recordings. There is no substitute for taking what you know and applying it to a real life performance or rehearsal situation with other musicians, but the preparation for that starts way earlier, and is a solitary pilgrimage through the countryside of melody and harmony, that brought you to this music in the first place. For me it was the likes of Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Mike Stern, and Miles Davis. For you, the landscape and the journey may look a little different, but the concept for navigating the path is identical if you want to speak this language fluently.
