I am Dr.Zulfiqar Ahmad today I am discussing about Downer Cow Syndrome(Or Downer cow).Animal can be recumbent due to certain reasons as given below…. 1)-Infections as in Mastitis,Myocarditis,Peritonitis etc. 2)-Mineral deficiency as in Hypocalcemia i-e Milk fever and Hypophosphatemia i-e Red Water. 3)-Aminoacid & Multivitamin Deficiency. 4)-Nerve Damage as a result of Trauma or muscle pressure. 5)-Fracture. 6)-Acquired injuries to Tendons i-e Quadricep femoris and Tendo Achille’s. In above reasons point no 1,2,3 have good prognosis and rest should not be tried to be cured………In 90% of cases there is mineral deficiency as a result animal may go into sternal/lateral recumbancy.If you cope up with deficiency then animal can be cured. Thumb Rules: 1) Fulfill Energy demands 2) Fulfill Aminoacid/Mineral Demands 3) Exercise/Physiotherapy of affected side.
