The U.S. Patriot Act of 2001 defined "critical infrastructure" as those "systems and assets, whether physical or virtual, so vital to the United States that the incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public health, or safety, or any combination of those matters." These crucial sectors include transportation, water, energy and communications, among others. Since 2001, the scope of critical infrastructure has been expanded to address current and emerging challenges. In this recap video, Clint Ladd, who oversees the Texas Office of Critical Infrastructure, a component of the Texas Office of Homeland Security, examines the many facets of critical infrastructure vital to keeping the United States and its citizens safe from real and potential threats, such as cyberattacks or attacks on a water utility.
