Sclerosis means the hardening of the bone or extra bone formation in a particular region. It could be physiological or it could be pathological. For example near the facet joint o near the end plates of the disc, in degenerative changes, there could be protective sclerosis. They could be normal, physiological. So nothing to worry. Sometimes it could be a part of a disease like osteoid osteoma. So in such cases we need to worry. Suppose it is painful and it is pointing to a sclerotic lesion, then we need to take MRI, CT scan , x-rays and all these and find exactly what exactly is this sclerotic lesion and if it is giving problem then definitely it can be excised, it can be removed.
