Clipping is a word formation process in which a word is reduced to one of its parts. It is also known as " truncation or shortening". According to Merchand, the clippings are not coined as words belonging to the standard vocabulary of language. Now these clippings have been the parts of the standard English because the speakers use them such as " lab, ( laboratory ) math, ( mathematics )exam,  ( examination )phone ( telephone )and fridge ( refrigerator ), etc. There is a difference between clipping and back formation because the back formation may change the parts of speech with its meaning and clipping creates shortened words from longer words but never changes the parts of speech with the meaning. According to Irina Arnold, clipping is seen with the following types. 1. Initial Clipping : The initial part of the word is clipped or shortened in this process. Ex., " net "from " " internet " 2. Final and Initial Clipping: Ex., "flu" is a clipped word from " influenza". Here, initial and final parts of the word, " influenza"  have been cut or broken and an innovative word, "flu" has been made. Ex., "fridge" from " refrigerator " initial and final part have been clipped or broken from the word and "fridge" has been made. 3. Medial Clipping: Ex., "ma'am" from madam, here the middle part of "madam" has been broken. 4. Complex Clipping : This clipping is done with compound words. Ex., "cablegram" from " cable-telegram, org-man from " organization man", here, first complex clipped word has been made from the first compound word, cable and then gram the last word, gram so such a mixture is called a complex clipping.
