Ultimate Doom In Name Only (or UDINO) is a 36-map Ultimate Doom WAD released in 2023 and led by cannonball and the inimitable dobu gabu maru. As alluded to in the title, UDINO takes the original level titles of UD’s episodes and creates entirely new levels around them. The idea is as vague as it is freeing, allowing for the mind to run wild with interpretations of id’s level titles, and my god did the UDINO team’s collective mind run wild. With goals such as being equal parts fun, challenging, and creative, the end product was bound to be an eclectic and inventive powerhouse. If I were to showcase ANY Ultimate Doom WAD on the channel, this one would have always been my first pick. Its sky-high ambition, clever level designs, and stunning, fully-realized vision made it easily one of the most distinctive and engaging WADs I’ve played in a long time. As to not spoil the experience right away, I’ll just leave it at that. UDINO PLAYLIST: • Ultimate Doom In Name Only ==================== IWAD: Doom Port: DSDA-doom 29.3 Compatibility: limit-removing (comp level 3) Mapper(s): dobu gabu maru MIDIs: Alfonzo - Copperhead (from Bloody Rust 3) ==================== UDINO: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/lev... DSDA-doom: https://github.com/kraflab/dsda-doom ==================== Here it is, folks, the ultimate turning point for UDINO. So far, UDINO has been a familiar experience, deriving more of its ideas from WADs in the past rather than trying to push the envelope. However, that kind of ends right here, with the brilliant dobu gabu maru’s vision of Computer Station. What starts as a rather pedestrian outing quickly turns into a genius deep dive into a corrupted facility overrun by a rogue supercomputer. That’s how I interpret the map, at least I think if I had to point anyone to one map in this WAD that is an exemplar of this WAD’s stunning creativity while not taking too much of the player’s time, it’s going to be this map. It’s a truly awe-inspiring experience playing this map. The sheer amount of detail packed into the visuals is incredible. DGM puts on a visual show here and even makes it thematically relevant. This is undoubtedly a computer station, as the whole damn thing is riddled with wires, circuitry, computer panels, and that lovely blue computer texture we all know so well. It’s also very angular, precise, and unnerving at times. Everything about the map feels sinister, yet this domain of wires and simulations is so detached from anything Satan would think of. Part of the main gameplay loop in this map is figuring out the two puzzles dobu has for you. They’re not too hard, but they’re still very engaging and respectful of the player’s time. Part of this is due to the floor in the simulated blue rooms damaging you, where the actual puzzles are. It creates a nice tension while solving the puzzles. However, it’s also due to dobu allowing you to practice the puzzles in the real world before trying them for real. This not only makes the puzzles easier, but it also doesn’t make them the star of the show. Rather, they play a key role in solidifying the theme of the map instead of stealing the spotlight. What’s even more genius, though, is the ending sequence. Once you step into the titanic cavern and step down to the watery arena, an eruption of gunfire commences, and you have to grit your teeth through hundreds of hitscanners and Imps. It’s a glorious and fitting payoff after the puzzle gameplay. What’s even better is the ending sequence, the E1M1 ending. The visual storytelling here is just top-notch, and the fact that it all starts collapsing as if the entire world has been corrupted is just genius. It’s like you entered a virus-infected computer simulation of E1M1, which is even more evident after trying to exit. The part where you frantically try to escape the simulation as it all comes crashing down is still a moment that sticks in my mind. Something that should be abundantly clear by this point is that UDINO is not a normal WAD. It’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothing for the first 7 maps, but Computer Station does away with any subtleties and reveals its WAD’s grand ambitions. DGM’s first solo offering is one of his best, in my opinion, and it being an Ultimate Doom level of all things is even more surprising and impressive. It’s simply remarkable how two simple words can make one’s imagination run completely wild with ideas. Who better than DGM to bring those ideas to life? Like another map coming up much later, this is easily one of my favorite Ultimate Doom maps I’ve ever played, and one that will stick in my head for a long time. #doom
