The Mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi'i in Cairo, located in the Southern City of the Dead, is a premier Islamic monument, built in 1211 CE, housing the tomb of the founder of the Shafi'i school of Sunni jurisprudence. Featuring a prominent wooden dome and intricate decoration, the site was commissioned by Sultan al-Kamil. It remains a major pilgrimage site. Key Details about the Site: Location: Situated on Imam Al-Shafi'i Street in the Southern Cemetery (Qarafa) of Cairo. Significance: Imam al-Shafi'i (d. 819/820 AD) taught at the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As before being buried in this area. Structure: The current structure, topped with a distinctive wooden dome, was built in 1211 by Ayyubid Sultan al-Kamil for his mother, later encompassing the imam's grave. It includes a lavish wooden cenotaph with teakwood carvings from 1178. Renovations: The site features additions from the Mamluk and Ottoman periods. It underwent significant, detailed restoration in the 21st century. Boat Symbolism: A small copper boat sits on the dome, traditionally representing the imam's vast knowledge.
