Tips on How to Prevent Getting Mould on Your Pipe Chanter Reed

In response to a question from GWRJim: keep chanter reed dry when not in use. Do not wet it before use (unless it's a 'ridge-cut' - see AppsReeds video on this) - it will gradually improve in sound quality after it has been blown for a while, absorbing the moisture in your breath. After use, allow to dry (but not near a fire, in the sun or near a radiator), then either use a reed protector, or as I now do - slide the chanter inside a sleeve made from a length of plumbing pipe. The length of the sleeve is about 22.5 inches (57cm) or to suit the length of your pipe case, and the internal diameter is about 1.5 inches (36 cms.). The plumbing pipe is usually sold in lengths of 2m, so will need sawing to size.
