Known as the birthplace of the poet Sappho, the city housed the school she established on a small acropolis overlooking the city. During the Greco-Persian Wars, Mytilene was under the domination of the Achaemenid Empire, but later became a loyal ally of Athens after wars and eventually a member of the Delian League. When the Peloponnesian War broke out, the city revolted against Athens in 428 BCE after they were faced with the increasing tributes to the city. It is the eleventh major installment, and 21st overall, in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins. Set in the years 431-422 BC, the plot tells a mythological history of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. Players control a male or female mercenary (Ancient Greek: μίσθιος misthios) who fights on both sides of the conflict as they attempt to find their family. The game's genetic memory story is set in 431 BCE, recounting the secret history of the Peloponnesian War, fought between the city-states of ancient Greece. The protagonist is a mercenary named either Alexios or Kassandra (selectable) who can choose to fight for either Athens and the Delian League or Sparta and the Peloponnesian League, as well as against the Cult of Kosmos. The modern day segments will again follow Layla Hassan, who was first introduced in Assassin's Creed Origins, and her story will touch on the Isu.
