Night Club scene from I Want to Live focused ears and turned on Ifcopod to the excitement of jazz. No not Louis Armstrong and precious curatorial attitude to early jazz ~ where's that Underworld Moaner track on canal de Ifcopod especially for jazz duffers. Later hard bop sound of 1950s hip jazz with oodles of West Coast input.~ My jazz was avowedly modern the more the merrier ~ luckily big bands especially Stan Kenton were still knocking around but it was quite a while before I heard of Bob Graettinger I Want to live was 1958 ( I didn't see the movie till about 1960 when jazz was cresting on its successes before the long slow decline. At the time as a jazz neophyte I hadn't the foggiest about the music but this track was uber hip the perihelion of uptempo hip ~ the effect ~ electric. Since then the musical world has turned upside down Pierre Boulez hasn't conquered with his rigid music and Jimi Hendrix is long gone not an especially exciting time despite world music explorations . My favourite among the musicians here went along the lines Frank Rosolino (trombone) in spirit at least ~ probably the most jarringly modern of the sidemen. Not far behind ..Bud Shank (alto sax) still caught in the penumbra of the greatest of them all altoist Charlie Parker and Pete Jolly piano. At the time they were all ifcopod unknowns They were all major figures in jazz Only barely into teens yet the music had a wild and lasting impact. . A good opening solo from Mulligan on baritone sax setting the drug fuelled atmosphere Interestingly early in his solo Gerry Mulligan momentarily deflects the intensity switching to swing phrasing . Ifcopod ~ more observation than quibble. The track has lost some of its impact but look what came a few years after ~ white heat Ascension from John Coltrane ~ I should have said a deal about composer Johnny Mandel one of West Coast's indeed jazz' most eminent arranger composers . The Shining Sea sung either by Irene Kral or Peggy lee is always worth a listen Like many arranger composers of the era Mandel ~even did a Frank Sinatra album on Reprise ~Mandel did some very worthwhile film scores. an extremely moody one for Point Blank and a lovely opening titles complete with buzzing noise for Harper . Sandpiper with the song so popular at the time Shadow of your Smile is a favourite for many. even better his A Time for Love which Michel Legrand included on a 1960s album. http://www.freemake.com/free_video_co...
