The wonderful building of Vidhan Soudha is counted as one of the major heritage and historic sites in India. This impressive building is located in the tech city of Bangalore in the state of Karnataka. Vidhan Soudha is the place of the state legislature of the state. This impressive edifice was built in the 1950's after being conceptualized by the Chief Minister of Mysore, Shri Kengal Hanumanthaiah. The construction work continued from 1951 to 1956. This is a real architectural masterpiece as was result of the various ideas that were incorporated in this building. Shri Kengal Hanumanthaiah visited Europe, Russia, United States to get an idea of the building of the Vidhan Soudha in Bangalore. It can be said that it was built in the Neo-Dravidian architectural style and has the elements of Indo-Saracenic, Rajasthani Jharokha and Dravidian designs. Vidhan Soudha was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on July 13, 1951. The whole building is built up of granite and is commonly called Taj Mahal of South India. It is said that huge number of skilled laborers were used in the construction work of the Vidhan Soudha. It is said that thousands of prisoners were also employed because of the scarcity of the laborers. Large sum of money (17.5 million rupees) were involved in the construction of the building. It is a four storied edifice with a floor under ground. Sprawling across 700 by 350 feet, this has been recognized as the biggest legislative building in India. At the eastern par, you will find 12 granite columns, each of which are 40 feet tall. The steps that lead to the upper floors are more than 200 feet wide. The central dome is huge and measures about 60 feet in diameter. The dome has a figure that resembles the Indian national emblem.
