The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, also known as The Alameda, are a beautiful and historic botanical garden located at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar. The gardens were commissioned in 1816 by the British Governor of Gibraltar, General George Don, to provide a recreational area for soldiers and residents. Spanning around 6 hectares (15 acres), the gardens feature a diverse collection of plants from different climatic zones around the world. The gardens are home to a variety of plants, including dragon trees, stone pines, wild olives, Australian silk oaks, and Canary Island date palms. Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is nestled within the gardens, this park is home to both exotic and native species, focusing on conservation and rescue efforts. The Bicentenary House is a glasshouse within the gardens, open by appointment for groups. The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens are a wonderful place to spend a day, offering a mix of natural beauty, history, and conservation efforts.
