Gruyères is in the mountains in Switzerland. It is a Swiss medieval town with a lot of history. In the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland's French-speaking part, Romandie, Gruyères is famous for its cheese of the same name. It is a medieval town with beautiful, well preserved buildings and a cobbled main street. It is dominated by its castle, Château de Gruyères or Gruyères Castle. This town in the Alps is home to the HR Giger Museum, Swiss artist and creator of the set for Ridley Scott's film Alien. Giger bought the Château St Germain to house his art and since 1998 has been a museum. Visiting it is an amazing if slightly disturbing experience with its dark walls, ornate carvedf floor and paintings and sculptures in Giger's unique biomechical style, merging machinery with humanoid figures and borrowing from sexual, occult and Greek mythological themes. Across the road is the Giger Bar, designed by Giger himself. With its alien bones lining the walls and ceiling, its carved floor and Harkonnen chairs is an immersive experience, giving you the feeling you are dining in the body of a large alien. Sit in a Harkonnen chair at the bar and enjoy the region's infamous drink, the Green Fairy, or Absinthe. Also in Gruyüres, next door to the HR Giger Museum, is the Tibet Museum. Housing the collection of Alain Bordier, who collected the 300 exhibits over three decades, it is one of the largest collections of Buddhist art in Europe. It is also an immersive experience, dimmly lit, serene and glittering in gold, with meditative music playing. At the top of the hill is Gruyères' main castle, Château de Gruyères. It was built in the 13th century by the counts of Gruyüres. They eventually went bankrupt and it was taken over by the bailiffs of Fribourg before eventually selling in the 19th century to the Bovy brothers of Geneva. Artistically inclined, they restored the building and turned it into something of an artistic commune, with friends from Geneva and France ornately decorating the walls. Today it is beautifully preserved and open to the public.
