Handmade Watercolor Paint Making Tutorial Series - How to Make Handmade Watercolor Paint

This is the second video in my handmade watercolor paint making video series. In this video I will cover the process for mixing a single pigment powder with handmade watercolor medium / binder to create a watercolor paint. There are many different manufacturer's of powdered pigments. This video I use a cobalt blue pigment from Jackson's Art from the UK. This pigment is a fairly easy pigment to mix as it combines easily with the binder and takes very little time to mull. Be aware when choosing pigments to make into paint, they will all have different characteristics and some will not mix easily with your binder and require a longer mixing time to incorporate with your liquid before you can begin mulling them. Learning some color theory will help you to combine combinations of different pigments to create your own colors. Make sure to keep a notebook or some sort of database to reference your recipes to remake colors you want to make again! My supplies: Borosilicate glass muller (I purchased mine from Ebay but you can find them at many fine art supply sellers and most pigment companies sell paint making supplies as well) Tempered glass sheet (mine is 11x14" and I ordered it from a glass company) I have roughened the middle of my glass slab with Silicon Carbide to help grind the fine particles of pigment further. Palette Knife Measuring Spoons - Have a set only for pigments - do not use your kitchen measuring spoons! Some pigments may have toxic materials. Powdered pigment - Cobalt Blue - Jackson's Art UK Handmade Watercolor Binder - see my other videos for instructions and my recipe. Honey - I use local honey from Iowa - when choosing a honey look for runnier / thinner honey. You can also use more vegetable glycerin for adding humectant. Note, that not all pigments you will want to add additional humectant to, this is something you will need to test with each new pigment. It is beneficial to try small batches of 1tsp - 1TBS of pigment to begin with and see how it mixes and dries to help perfect your recipe for each individual pigment. Dust Mask and maybe safety goggles / glasses to prevent pigments from dusting up into your eyes, nose or mouth! If you are worried about getting paint on your hands while you are mixing (especially for very staining pigments) where a pair of disposable gloves. Small jar or containers for storing your paint Watercolor pans to pour paint into I use a separate dish brush for washing my palette in my utility sink. You can wash it with regular dish soap and water and dry your tools between batches of paint. I recommend using a scrub brush to clean your glass slab as some colors will be harder to wash off your slab without using some sort of abrasive.
