Ayup! We're going underground again. Phil and I are between Rowsley and Bakewell in Derbyshire, and we're here to look at Haddon Tunnel. The Midland Railway extended their line from London through the Peak District and on to Manchester, in 1863, but not before sow rows with the local gentry! The Duke of Rutland, who lived in the medieval Haddon Hall, insisted the trains be hidden from his view, and so a shallow tunnel was constructed. The construction cost the lives of five men after a collapse of enormous stonework fell from the roof. The tunnel closed in 1968, and nature has attempted to reclaim it in quite striking fashion, but there are still some incredible remains still inside! I refer to a previous attempt to get inside.
