The officially offered Mercedes got massive bumpers, different headlights, and had limited power. However, some dealers were able to get around the regulations and offered certified European versions of the SL in their own showrooms. The car would then get an additional nameplate as proof of its U.S. approval. These cars were referred to as "grey market" and it is estimated that around 200 cars with the modern, dynamic and officially unavailable in the United States 2.8-litre DOHC engine found their way to the American market in this way.
