In Thai society, we often see news stories about male elephants wandering out of the forest alone. A solitary bull elephant, walking by itself, can easily appear lonely and isolated. But have you ever wondered— where did they come from before they were on their own? Why do elephants live together in herds? Who acts as the leader, or the matriarch of the group? Do elephants have specific roles within the herd, or do they simply wander day by day in search of food? In this episode of Elephant 101, we invite you to explore the world of elephant society— a world filled with relationships, affection, and complex social roles, not so different from those of humans. Let’s be clear from the start: elephants are not solitary animals. They are born to live together and to learn from one another within a herd— from choosing a matriarch, to communal care of calves, and even the role of allomothers—elephants who help raise the young of others. This social structure is the very heart of elephant survival and reveals so much about the intelligence of this remarkable species. Perhaps by studying and observing them more closely, we will not only better understand what it truly means to be an elephant, but also discover a model of a healthy society for ourselves. At the same time, this understanding may help us see new ways forward in addressing the long-standing and increasingly intense conflict between humans and elephants. ⏱ Episode Breakdown 0:22 – Episode introduction 1:04 – Elephant herd structure and the role of the matriarch (e.g. Khao Yai, Ang Rue Nai) 1:41 – Graphics explaining elephant social structure 2:21 – The role of allomothers within the herd 3:52 – Newborn calves: the heart of the herd (Why abandoned calves like Khao Tom remain an unanswered question) 4:17 – Male elephants leaving the herd (and how this sometimes leads to human–elephant conflict) 5:25 – Conclusion 📌 In this episode, you’ll learn: Why do elephants live in herds? What role does the matriarch play? What is communal calf-rearing, and how does it improve survival? How do elephants communicate within the herd? Why are some male elephants pushed out when they reach a certain age? 🏷 Hashtags #WildElephants #ElephantHerd #Elephant101TH #ElephantSociety #ElephantFamily #ElephantBehavior #BabyElephant #ElephantSocialLife #ThaiElephants #Wildlife #Elephants 📚 References: Animal behaviorists and veterinarians from the Thai Elephant Conservation Center Field observations of wild elephants in protected areas across Thailand
