Welcome to Stone Temple Gardening — where we dig deep into the rich loam of prehistory, working with stone, light, and place to cultivate new understandings of the past. 🔗 Full essay on Belas Knap here: https://www.stonetemplegardening.com/... 🌿 More landscape writing & research: https://www.stonetemplegardening.com Belas Knap Long Barrow stands just below the western crest of Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire, a Neolithic Cotswold–Severn chambered tomb poised between ridge and vale. In this film we approach the monument as it was meant to be encountered — ascending the limestone slope, taking in the wide views from the top of Cleeve Hill, before passing through the narrowing green tunnel that leads toward the mound itself. The entrance reveals the blocking stone — a form that, from certain angles, takes on the profile of an animal head. Moving counter-clockwise around the monument, we examine the burial chambers in turn, noting another stone within one chamber that carries a similar zoomorphic presence. We look closely at the lintels of the false entrance and Chamber B, exploring how shape, mass, and silhouette may have been perceived by Neolithic builders and visitors. Were these simply structural stones, or did their forms contribute to how the monument was experienced and understood? This is not about imposing myth, but about looking carefully — about asking how stone, light, and movement interact within a prehistoric landscape.
