Today is Augie Bossu Day, May 5th, 2024. 50 years ago last fall, the Class of 1974 and their fellow underclassmen began and completed a journey to Benedictine’s 2nd State Championship. In 1973, the OHSAA had only begun holding playoffs and State Championship games in Classes A, AA, and AAA for a single year. Before 1972, all State Championships were awarded by major newspapers to teams that felt like the most deserving based on their outstanding performances during the regular season. It was a time of transition for the Bengals. They left the Senate League in the spring 1972 after winning the title in football once again in 1971. Noww, the Bengals eyed a new trophy for the Home of Champions. Hear from the Class of 1974 and their coaches as they recount what that season was like.
