(31 Jan 1997) Natural Sound Peru's President Alberto Fujimori arrived in Canada on Friday for talks with Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto on how to end the hostage crisis in Lima. The two parties have so far been divided over how to deal with the rebels from the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, or M-R-T-A. The rebels seized the Japanese embassy in Lima last December and are currently holding 72 people captive. The plane carrying Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori touched down in the middle of a snowstorm at Toronto International Airport on Friday following a ten-hour flight from Lima. Fujimori is due to meet Japan's Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto on Saturday to co-ordinate a strategy on the hostage crisis in Lima. The Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, or M-R-T-A, have been holding 72 people captive. The rebels' main demand has been the Peruvian government release their imprisoned comrades. Talks between Fujimori and the rebels broke down weeks ago, despite efforts by mediators such as Bishop Juan Luis Cipriani. Canadian Ambassador Anthony Vincent, Cipriani and a number of Peruvian government negotiators joined Fujimori on the trip to Canada. The Peruvian leader has taken a tough line against the rebels -- a stance generally supported by the Japanese government. He is expected to reiterate his position during his meeting with Hashimoto -- particularly after Tokyo voiced concerns this week over Peruvian police harassment tactics which were designed to wear down the rebels' stamina. Japan said the measures put the hostages in unnecessary risk. The ambassador's residence is officially Japanese territory. Hashimoto may try to press Fujimori for more conciliation in order to revive stalled discussions with the Tupac Amaru rebels. Concern for the captives' health is increasing and aid workers say several people suffer from stress-related illnesses.
