SPECIFIC is celebrating ten years of energy technology development, from research to buildings. In the first of our research webinars, we take a look at our progress upscaling heat storage materials for space heating applications. Heavy industries can release up to half of their consumed energy as waste heat. The heat generated by the Port Talbot steelworks is equivalent to the heating demand of 500,000 homes; capturing and re-using it would offset more than a million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. SPECIFIC's thermal heat storage research is focused on using active material that can capture, store and release waste heat from places such as Port Talbot steelworks. But the journey from lab scale to building demonstrators is not always a linear one... Thermal Storage Research Lead, Dr Jon Elvins gives us an overview of our progress to upscale the heat storage material and our route from small scale research to building scale demonstrators.
