We visit the Perth to to walk the Trisha Tribute Walk in memory of Tricia, the matriarch Perth Zoo who passed away aged 65. Tricia was amongst the oldest elephants in the world. Tricia was born in 1957 in Vietnam before arriving in Perth in 1963. Tricia was named after the 1962 Miss Australia (Tricia Reschke) back in a time when beauty pageants were the thing. Tricia saw many changes to the zoo going from concrete enclosures to more natural habitats with pools. Tricia spent the first 20 years alone before being joined by three young elephants in 1992 from Malaysia. (Petra Mas, Permia and Teduh). When the Perth Zoo celebrated its 120th Anniversary it announced that after the death of Tricia, the remaining elephants would be rehoused to other zoos to be part of a bigger herd setting. Unfortunately there is not enough space at the Perth Zoo to accomodate a bigger elephant exhibit that could accommodate a functioning herd of elephants. Generations of West Australians have visited Tricia over the years and leaves a lasting legacy on all those that she met. A ferry tat crosses the nearby Swan River bears her name. Tricia become an icon of Perth and in her honour a Tricia Tribute to Conservation Fund has been established. This will build a elephant guard pst in Tricia’s name in Bukit Tigapuluh, Sumatra which will help monitor one of the last remaining here’d of wild Sumatran Elephants. Proceeds will also contribute to the congestion work of Perth Zoo which continues to care for more than 1,500 of Tricia’s animal neighbours in the zoo. Please support and donate to the Tricia Tribute to Conservation Fund.
