The Global Initiative Against Impunity hosted "Bitter Legacy: State Impunity and the Northern Ireland Conflict", the first edition of the Making Justice Work webinar series. The webinar, taking place on 30 June 2025, engaged attendees in a a conversation on the enduring legacy of impunity during the 1968-1998 Northern Ireland conflict, based on the findings of an international expert panel. The discussion will explore how state practices of denial and collusion continue to shape justice struggles globally. Speakers in Northern Ireland, Brazil, Lebanon, and Argentina, drew powerful parallels across post-conflict contexts on truth-telling, memory, and accountability. Speakers 🔵 María José Guembe is a member of the International Panel on the Impunity of State Crimes in Northern Ireland. She is a specialist in transitional justice and serves as President of the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) in Argentina. 🔵 Dr Brian Dooley is a member of the International Panel on the Impunity of State Crimes in Northern Ireland. He is a Senior Advisor at Human Rights First, a Washington DC-based NGO. 🔵 Maurice Politi is a former political prisoner, one of the founders of the Center for the Preservation of Political Memory in Brazil and the organisation's first director. 🔵 Brigitte Chelebian is an attorney-at-law and a leading expert in human rights, gender justice, and rule of law in the MENA region. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Justice Without Frontiers (JWF), a nonprofit organization committed to advancing justice, democracy, and human rights through legal reform, strategic litigation, and community empowerment. Moderated by Daniel Holder, Director of the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ), a human rights organization based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and affiliated with FIDH.
