This might be a good place to quote from the FJH edition of Woodland Sketches, which I highly recommend - it's beautifully presented and very informative. "MacDowell's performing style was highly original in comparison with other virtuosi of the day, being impressionistic and tending to blur, rather than define, the form." Under MacDowell's hands, "pieces clearly written, and "splendid for practice," became streams of murmuring or gushing tone." - T. P. Currier. Will o' the Wisp is the most challenging of the Woodland Sketches to play, especially considering that almost the entire piece is intended to be played at very low volume.
