For the first time since 2005, the world’s only airworthy Saab B 17 dive bomber returned to the UK air show scene. There were many variants of the Saab 17, the majority of which were used for bombing and some for reconnaissance. This particular example is a B 17A - the first of the dive bomber designations. Powered by a Swedish-built Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 Twin Wasp (the same engine used on B-24 Liberators, C-47 Skytrains and Grumman Wildcats - just to name a few…), it produced just over 1,000 horsepower and allowed the B 17 to fly at approximately 270 mph up to around 30,000 ft. The aircraft is now part of the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight who own and operate many types of unique ex-Swedish military aircraft. It joined a plethora of warbirds at the 2024 Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show and performed a fantastic solo display. The last UK air show this warbird displayed at was Flying Legends in 2005. Hopefully we don’t have to wait a further 19 years to see it here again!
