It usually occurs on the neck and face area. Sometimes it can occur in the underarms. And the thighs and very rarely it can occur on anywhere else in the body like the abdomen, back, legs and hands. For this there are various procedures the oldest procedure is called as electrocautery where it is burned by current. A slightly newer version would be radiofrequency ablation where these tags are cut using a radiofrequency abalator. So we do these procedures for people who cannot afford the laser. The latest technology is called as carbondioxde laser. The advantage of laser is that it damages the skin tags without causing much collateral damage, that is it doesn’t damage the surrounding skin as much as the cautery machine or the RF machine would do. So in this the first step would be asking the patient to clean their face using a cleanses or a face wash and then we degrease the face and we apply an anesthetic cream. Anesthetic cream is applied and a sticker is applied on top of that which is left for one hour. After an hour that area becomes slightly numb. Then we start off the procedure. Before starts in the procedure the anesthetic cream is taken off. Forceps or tweezers are used to hold the skin tag and if they are very flat tags , they are directly burned by the laser. So this laser causes heating of the water molecule present and it vaporizers the tissue that we want to abalate. This tissue vaporizing as you can see is sucked off by a smoke evacuator machine. Since the smoke can also cause damage to the treating person as well as the patient. So once the skin tags are removed, we give some after care to the patient. The areas where the skin tags are removed, have slightly sensitive skin. Therefore we apply a healing gel, which usually contains growth factor. If the skin tags are very small, just an anti-inflammatory or an antibiotic ointment is applied. The patient is asked to show us on the 3rd or the 5th day after the procedure is done to anticipated if he may develop certain marks due to the laser. In case marks develop, treatment is started to prevent them and in the worst case scenario patient may develop temporary marks for 2 to 3 weeks, which is absolutely treatable.
