ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) — An uncle is charged with the death of his 3-year-old nephew this week in Escambia County. The sheriff's office announced Friday that 28-year-old Samuel Antonio Maldonado Erazo is charged with negligent manslaughter. He was booked into jail on Thursday around 11:30 p.m. Sheriff Chip Simmons says the child died after suffering "horrendous and despicable treatment" by his caregiver uncle, Maldonado Erazo. The child ended up in Maldonado Erazo's care after his mother and aunt were recently deported due to their illegal immigrant status, according to the sheriff. Deputies say Maldonado Erazo is also in the country illegally. The 3-year-old died on Wednesday at the hospital after a 911 call for a cardiac arrest. A criminal investigation immediately began. Sheriff Simmons listed the boy's many injuries, including: -extensive bruising throughout body -17 strikes to the head -several burn marks "consistent with heating a lighter and then pressing that lighter against his skin" -several broken ribs, including one detached from his backbone transected pancreas consistent with severe blunt trauma -broken collarbone -signs of possible sexual abuse -Sheriff Simmons added that many of the injuries were in different stages of healing. "These injuries and the neglect associated with them contributed to his death," he said. Sheriff Simmons says that on Wednesday, instead of getting the boy treatment, Maldonado Erazo took his nephew to work with him despite the child showing "signs of extreme distress throughout the day." The boy then "declined to a point of cardiac arrest." The sheriff's office says it is collaborating with the State Attorney's Office and Medical Examiner's Office to possibly upgrade Maldonado Erazo's charge. "We are continuing to investigate with the possibility of upgrading that charge to hold him fully accountable to the injuries and death, as well as the care," Sheriff Simmons said. Maldonado Erazo is being held in Escambia County Jail without bond. "The injuries to the child are hard to talk about and even harder to imagine having to endure," Sheriff Simmons said. "The only solace I can think of is he suffers no more." Maldonado Erazo had been living in a shed behind a home on Brentco Road in Cantonment with multiple children, according to the homeowner. #pensacola #florida #news #iran ---------------------------- READ MORE STORIES: https://weartv.com/ Stay up to date with our social media: WEAR on Facebook: / weartv WEAR on Twitter: / weartv WEAR on Instagram: / weartv WEAR on TikTok: http://tiktok.com/weartv Subscribe to WEAR on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHiv...
