Warning: This video contains actual surgical footage which may not be suitable for all viewers. Cardiothoracic surgeons Marc Gillinov, MD, uses five main techniques to repair the mitral valve. These methods help the valve work properly again without needing to replace it. In this video, Dr. Gillinov explains these techniques using artist depictions and surgical footage. The five techniques: 1. Triangular Resection - If part of the valve is floppy or bulging, the surgeon trims a small triangle-shaped piece and stitches the edges back together. This helps the valve close again. 2. Sliding Repair - If the valve is too loose and might block blood flow, the surgeon shifts nearby parts of the valve to a better position. This helps it open and close more smoothly. 3. Artificial Chords - The valve has tiny strings (called chords) that help it move. If those are broken or stretched, the surgeon replaces them with strong, flexible threads made from medical material. 4. Commissuroplasty - If the problem is at the corners of the valve, the surgeon tightens those areas to stop leaks - without making the valve too narrow. 5. Annuloplasty - The valve sits in a ring-like structure. If that ring is stretched out, the surgeon adds a supportive band to reshape it. This helps the valve stay strong and work well overtime.
