Now you can learn how to play the Rhodes part from As step by step, by following the notes as they light up on the midi keyboard. This is a transcription of the Rhodes parts played by Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder on 'As', from 'Songs In The Key Of Life'. Herbie's lines are covered in my right hand, and Stevie's comping is covered in my left hand. If you listen very carefully to the original, you'll hear that some small sections of comping (bass octaves etc) are missed out in my transcription - that's deliberate in this case, so I can cover everything that Herbie played. This is more of a reduction than a note-for-note transcription. These videos should also be useful for anybody wanting to figure out a particular lick or a chord voicing from a track. Next, I perform the song again - on my Nord Stage 2 - and record just the midi from that performance. The reason I do it this way is because the articulation and weighting of chords is very important; you will notice that the intensity of the colour of the keys when they light up is related to the velocity. That way, it's easier to see which notes are 'ghost' notes and which lines to bring out. I decided that a second 'human' performance (with slight differences) was therefore much more helpful than a robotic midi performance created from a Sibelius export. I only do about three takes maximum and I use complete, unedited takes, so there may well be occasional differences between the audio and the notes that light up on the midi keyboard. These are very minor and will often only be timing discrepancies.
