First Fertilizer Application Of The Year For The Lawn: When, What, How, Why, & Why Not

In late March (the beginning of Spring) it's common for yard owners of both warm-season and cold-season grasses to want to get out into the lawn and fertilize for the first time of the year. For most people around the country, we've been experiencing mostly brown lawns for months now. At this time of year however, it's best to resist the urge to fertilize with Nitrogen, Phosphorus, or Potassium (NPK) for various reasons but there are some lawn applications we can do at this time. When the grass starts to emerge from dormancy the root system wakes up before the surface leaf tissues. To get a jump start on the season we need to capitalize on the plant's natural tendency to want to push early Spring root growth by adding very specific products that cause more vigorous rooting. Pair this with micronutrients that aid in chlorophyll production and photosynthesis and we get an early spring lawn that greens up quickly and efficiently but puts all of its growth energy into the root, rhizome, and stolon systems rather than the greenery on top. In this video, I applied N-EXT's Humic12 product ( https://shrsl.com/46kwb ) to my lawn alongside a half rate of Simple Grow Solutions' Micro Booster product ( https://www.amazon.com/Micronutrient-... ).
