One of the hardest parts of teaching math without a textbook is knowing and using the progression of understanding. But it is the most vital. One of the areas I talked about previously is that the focus of instruction needs to be on issues of number, but our textbooks tend to focus on number skills instead of number sense. So last week we talked about what exactly number sense is in PreK-2 and this week we will be investigating 3rd-5th.
