Kefalos Last Stand The Kefalos Peninsula, on the western tip of Kos, became the site of the island’s final organized resistance following the collapse of defenses around Kos Town on October 4, 1943. As German troops swept across the island from Marmari and Antimachia, scattered British, Italian, and Greek soldiers withdrew toward Kefalos in hopes of evacuation or regrouping for a last stand. The rugged terrain around the village and its cliffs overlooking Kamari Bay offered a natural defensive position, but the exhausted defenders were short on food, ammunition, and communication. Luftwaffe aircraft relentlessly strafed retreating columns, while German infantry advanced methodically from the east, tightening the noose around the peninsula. By October 5, the remnants of the Allied force—mostly British infantry, RAF ground crews, and Italian troops from the Regina Division—had dug in around Kefalos village and the small port below. Brief firefights erupted as the Germans pressed their final assault, supported by mortars and light artillery. Despite isolated acts of bravery, the defense quickly crumbled under overwhelming pressure. Many Allied soldiers were captured on the beaches as they tried to escape by fishing boats or makeshift rafts. The fall of Kefalos marked the absolute end of resistance on Kos. With both the eastern harbor and western peninsula in German hands, the island was fully occupied, and the brief but bloody Dodecanese campaign turned decisively in Germany’s favor.
