Before transplanting it's necessary to harden off your seedlings to ensure they will be able to withstand the change when moving outdoors. The sun, wind, and rain can prove to be harsh conditions for seedlings. After starting your seeds indoors and before transplanting your vegetables outside you should plan for at least a week before your transplant date to harden off your plants. Hardening off is an easy gardening tip that will help ensure your plants thrive once transplanted. Simply take your seedling trays outside in the daytime for 2-3 hours to begin hardening off. Gradually, you will add more time until your seedlings are strong enough to withstand being transplanted. Eventually you will want to harden your plants off over night as well. You should consider hardening off your plants to avoid weak seedling stems, sunburned vegetable seedlings, and stunted vegetable growth. You may wonder "do I have to harden off plants?" and simply put, you do not need to harden your plants off -- but, if you don't harden them off, the plants growth may become stunted, the seedling stems may be weak and not able to withstand wind and rain, and the leaves will be tender and susceptible to sunburn. In this video I am hardening off tomato plants, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, and melons, and peppers to be planted within the next week or two in my summer vegetable garden. Taking the time to acclimate indoor seedlings to the outdoors will be well worth your while and is an easy gardening tip to implement for any beginner vegetable gardener.
