Millions of creatures exist that are far more perfect than man. Who are these creatures who are pure spirit without body; who know the secrets of nature; who are swifter than the blink of an eye; who have no shadow of imperfection? No painter or poet could come close to giving us a glimpse of their beauty. While their abilities are extraordinary, even more sublime is their mission. Come with me as I explore the mysteries surrounding God’s most faithful ministers, the admirable creatures we call the ANGELS. Since we have made it this far into the investigation of the Nine Choirs of Angels, I think a recap is in order. A very brief summary of what we have learned so far will help prepare us for what we have yet to discover. What are the primary roles of each choir? The lowest sphere of angels—the Principalities, Archangels, and Angels—are the ones you’ll want to keep at the forefront of your mind because they deal directly with us! They deliver messages from God to humans and prayers from humans to God. They are spiritual and physical protectors of individual people, the Church, nations, those who hold high offices, and the list goes on. They will offer aid in our spiritual warfare if we humbly ask. The second or middle sphere of angels, composed of the Dominions, Virtues, and the Powers fulfill God’s plans for the universe. They take orders from angels above them to govern the universe. And lastly, the upper sphere consists of the Seraphim, Cherubim, and the Thrones. They are centered entirely on God. Each choir within the upper sphere is associated with a specific quality of God. The Seraphim are called the “burning ones” in acknowledgment of the fire of divine charity that surrounds God. Cherubim, meaning “fullness of wisdom,” are associated with the wisdom and omniscience of God. And lastly, the Thrones are related to the power and almightiness of God. Today, we will be discussing the Cherubim. Given that the Cherubim are known for their fullness of wisdom, it makes sense that their true form would have multiple heads. In his vision of the living chariot of God, the prophet Ezechiel had a vision of the Cherubim. In Ezekiel chapter 10, the prophet wrote that he first saw a luminous cloud coming from the North that was in perpetual motion, like the flames of a fire. Then, within that fire he began to distinguish four living beings with bodies. Here’s what he says of them: “Each of the Cherubim had four faces: One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.” Catholic theologians have understood the four faces of the Cherubim to mean these angels possess the wisdom of man, the strength of a lion and the sublimity of an eagle. The Cherubim first appeared in the bible in the book of Genesis, with their main responsibility being the protectors of the Garden of Eden. As I’m sure we’re all familiar with what happened in that garden, I’ll not bore you with the details. But when Adam and Eve were cast out for eating of the forbidden fruit, it was the Cherubim who were tasked with guarding the Tree of Life. In Genesis 3:24 we read; “And he cast out Adam; and placed before the paradise of pleasure Cherubims, and a flaming sword, turning every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. So far, these two accounts of the Cherubim are nothing like what we have all been led to believe cherubs look like. And because of this the Cherubim have become one of the most misrepresented choirs of the angels. Often depicted as small chubby beings who float around on clouds twiddling with their harps not very interested in much of anything. They couldn’t be more opposite than this pathetic depiction of an Angel, because their incredible powers and unique identity has been lost on our modern society over the years. Like most lies, or in this case misrepresentations, there is an original story. The images that our minds conjure up when we think of Cherubs are actually called putti. The putti are personifications or visual representations of the human spirit and emotions, including that of love. ... Watch the Video to Learn More ... What are the Cherubim???
