The Eaton Collection of Science Fiction & Fantasy, part of UCR Library’s Special Collections and University Archives, last year acquired the original painting that served as the cover to author Ursula Le Guin’s award-winning 1969 novel “The Left Hand of Darkness.” The artwork is by famed American illustrators and husband-and-wife team Leo and Diane Dillon. The original artwork had been in the possession of Terry Carr, the editor of the novel and a well-known figure in science fiction publishing. Phoenix Alexander, the Jay Kay Klein Librarian for Science Fiction and Fantasy, describes the novel as one of the most groundbreaking science fiction novels of the 20th century.
