In our latest episode, we’re in Blenheim New Zealand, for an inside look at CarbonScape - a company turning wood chips into graphite through a catalytic, low-carbon process that could reshape the anode materials industry. In this facility tour, I’m joined by Dr. Heinrich Badenhorst, Interim Chief Technology Officer at CarbonScape, who walks us step by step through how biographite is actually produced. We begin at the point where raw biomass enters the facility and follow it through every major transformation: pyrolysis into charcoal, catalyst addition, heating in the roller kiln, purification, spheronisation, coating, and finally into the lab where the team assembles and tests coin cells and pouch cells. CarbonScape’s approach is fundamentally different from conventional synthetic graphite production. Instead of using petroleum feedstocks and heating to ~3,000°C, they start with sustainably sourced biomass and use a catalyst to graphitise at much lower temperatures, enabling massive energy and cost savings.
