छोराछोरीले नाच्न थाले Sakela मा! This weekend, I attended the Sakela festival in the UK, a special cultural festival of the Rai community from Nepal. Previously, this festival was widely known as ‘Chandi’, but after the rise of democracy in Nepal, the Rai community started researching their history and origins more deeply. Through this exploration, they discovered that the original and authentic name of the festival is ‘Sakela’. Therefore, the name was changed from ‘Chandi’ to ‘Sakela’ to better reflect their true cultural identity and heritage. Before this year, there were many separate Sakela events in the UK, but now they have united into one big event organised by Kirat Yayokha Rai Samaj UK. Sakela festivals in the UK have become much more than just events. They are a powerful movement for the Rai community abroad to preserve their identity and culture. Here, tradition, attire, culture, and community come together to keep alive our proud heritage far from home. In this 35-minute video, you will see the Sakela dance, a traditional dress show, and the lively cultural atmosphere. I also had the honour of interviewing Santosh Rai, the Guinness World Record holder from Nepal, who ran a full marathon in 2:59:47 — wearing traditional Nepali dress (Daura Suruwal & Dhaka Topi). This is the fastest marathon ever run in cultural attire – a proud moment for all Nepalis! On Saturday, 17 June 2025, thousands of Nepalis joined the UK Sakela Dance Festival 2025 wearing Rai traditional clothes. I also interviewed some local SMEs to find out: What is Sakela? Why did it change from Chandi to Sakela? What does the Sakela dance mean? There were Nepali food stalls, shops selling traditional items, jewellery, and children happily learning and dancing.
