Townscape in Winter, Walking at Dawn | Hida-Furukawa, Japan

A winter dawn walk through snowy Hida-Furukawa, a quiet historic town in Gifu, Japan. I stayed a couple nights in Takayama, a traditional town about 15 minutes from here, but I thought it would be nice to walk in Hida, rather than Takayama, to enjoy a more quiet morning morning atmosphere. We start along the Araki River and follow a canal through the old town before walking by Hida-Furukawa station, snow covered rice fields, and up to a hillside shrine overlooking the town. After I walked through I learned that this town is the location of the 2016 anime Your Name (君の名は), though it's been a while since I've seen it so I don't remember exactly which locations are featured. I really like this type of town, small and walkable, with historic buildings and traditional architecture, and the canals are always nice. They say there are koi in the canals in the warmer months, it might be worth a return visit to see if the rumors are true.
