Award-winning filmmaker Tebogo Malope is returning to Limpopo with a powerful new feature film that revisits one of the most intense chapters in South Africa’s struggle history. His upcoming political psychological drama Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun is set during the military occupation of the University of the North in Turfloop (now the University of Limpopo). The film follows the story of Ernest Khosa, a quiet rural student who becomes drawn into the underground resistance movement as students confront apartheid soldiers stationed on campus. Beyond telling an important historical story, the project also aims to empower a new generation of creatives, with Malope opening auditions and technical internship opportunities for young actors and filmmakers from Polokwane and surrounding areas. On this episode of #TheUpside, Tebogo Lekhuleni and Mmatsheko Mosito speak with Tebogo Malope about the inspiration behind the film and the legacy of student activism that shaped leaders such as Cyril Ramaphosa and Kgalema Motlanthe. In this conversation we discuss • The history behind the military occupation of Turfloop • How the film balances historical accuracy with dramatic storytelling • The character journey of Ernest Khosa and the psychology of resistance • The importance of community involvement in filmmaking • Opportunities for young actors and technical interns in Limpopo • How global storytelling experience has influenced Malope’s work Watch the full conversation as we explore how cinema can revisit history while inspiring the next generation of leaders and storytellers. #TheUpside #SouthAfricanHistory #Filmmaking
