It’s a long-period comet originating from the Oort Cloud, a reservoir of icy bodies that extends up to 100,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. With an orbital period of roughly 6,000 years, this is its first inner Solar System visit since before human civilization began. The comet’s nucleus is estimated to be 1–2 kilometers (0.6–1.2 miles) across — a dirty snowball of rock, dust, and frozen gases. As it nears the Sun, those ices vaporize, forming the bright coma and ion tail glowing in shades of green from diatomic carbon (C₂) and cyanogen (CN) gas. 🌞 Orbital and Physical Facts Perihelion (closest to Sun): ~0.73 AU (October 2025) Closest to Earth: ~0.4 AU (~60 million km) late October 2025 Estimated nucleus diameter: 1–2 km Speed through space: ~47 km/s (≈170,000 km/h or 105,000 mph) relative to the Sun Apparent brightness: magnitude 5–6 (visible with binoculars under dark skies) Altitude from Ilulissat: ~9° above the northern horizon 🌌 What You’ll See • The faint, emerald-hued glow of Comet Lemmon low over the Arctic Icefjord • Reflections from icebergs under starlight and possible auroral activity • A real-time look at an ancient object born during the formation of our Solar System, now blazing across the polar sky 📍 Location: Ilulissat, Greenland (69° N) 🎥 Livestream: Continuous 4K feed from the edge of the Arctic 📡 Host: AfarTV – Exploring Earth’s extremes and the wonders of space Join us for this extraordinary encounter between deep space and deep ice — a once-in-a-lifetime view from the top of the world.
