Inside of the concentration camps of the Second World War, there were many commandants who ruled over with a reign of terror. Commandants such as Rudolf Hoss became known for his brutality at Auschwitz, and at Dachau there was a man in charge who ordered the executions of thousands of people. Alexander Piorkowski was an ardent SS officer, and he was appointed as the Commandant of Dachau following being in charge of another camp. But during his time at Dachau, the camp would expand on a huge basis and the conditions there were horrific. Piorkowski during his time sent 4000 Soviet POWs to their deaths in a nearby rifle range, and also he ordered his guards to work hard and to force prisoners to be as productive as they could. The hard work and insufficient food led to many people dying at the camp, but Piorkowski was sacked for the fact he was accused of embezzling money from the pockets of the victims. But despite this he was brought to trial, and was sentenced to death by the Americans. At Landsberg Prison 3 years after the war had come to an end, he was executed.
