Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary is a lesser-known yet ecologically significant wildlife sanctuary in Uttarakhand, India. It is part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, situated between Jim Corbett National Park and Rajaji Tiger Reserve, and spans an area of approximately 301 square kilometers. The name "Sonanadi" means "river of gold," referring to the Sonanadi River that flows through the sanctuary, enriching its landscape. The sanctuary is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, making it a key part of the Corbett Reserve’s ecosystem. Some of the prominent wildlife species include: Tigers: Although less frequently spotted than in the core areas of Jim Corbett National Park, tigers roam the forests of Sonanadi. Asiatic Elephants: A significant population of elephants can be found here. Leopards: Like in many other parts of Uttarakhand, leopards are common in Sonanadi. Deer species: Including chital (spotted deer), sambhar, and barking deer. Birdlife: The sanctuary is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 600 species of birds, including the great hornbill, kingfishers, and vultures. The sanctuary is heavily forested, dominated by sal trees, and also features riverine areas, grasslands, and hilly terrains. Because Sonanadi is not as commercialized as Jim Corbett National Park, it offers a quieter, more serene experience for visitors and is an excellent place for wildlife safaris and birdwatching.
