(8 Dec 1994) Eng/Nat The first United Nations aid convoy into the besieged Bihac enclave for ten weeks has been held up. Trucks carrying desperately needed food are delayed at a Croatian Serb crossing point. The drivers were told they didn't have clearance. The UNHCR aid convoy assembled at a warehouse at Dujo Selo near Zagreb in the early hours. It's the first convoy for Bihac since October 1st. Only twelve have reached the besieged Muslim enclave in the last six months. Ten trucks are carrying food aid, including wheat flour, oil, yeast, salt, tinned meat, fish and cheese. They also have baby food and milk powder. The convoy had received clearance from the authorities in Knin. SOUNDBITE: This is the first UNHCR convoy that we have attempted to get in for some time. We had a convoy into the Bihac pocket as recently as October but it was a one-off. Our conventional, traditional convoys haven't gone in since May. We've got this window of opportunity. A lot of intense negotiations with the authorities in Knin and we're very keen to get this convoy in. We will be taking about a hundred metric tonnes of food items, mainly wheat flour but a lot of high protein, high value items, baby food as well. SUPER CAPTION: Peter Walsh, UNHCR But the convoy has been halted at Moscenica, the crossing-point into Serb-held Croatia, 35 kilometres (20 miles) south-east of Zagreb. Serbs there said they should have been given 24 hours' notice of travel. SOUNDBITE: The Serb checkpoint down the road deny they've received any clearance for us to take the convoy in. This is quite a normal procedure. We're trying to get that checked now with the authorities at Knin. SUPER CAPTION: Jerrie Hulme, UN Spokesman Bihac has seen some of the fiercest fighting in the war in the former Yugoslavia. Bosnian government forces are holding out against a furious onslaught by Serbs from Bosnia and Croatia and Muslim rebels.
