It was time for the finishing touches. We recorded an orchestra for UNSPOKEN and THE WATER, went to a community centre in Rochdale to record a choir of elderly gentlemen for VERONA and I did the remaining vocals for STAY and UNSPOKEN. The rest was done. At that point we sort of just abandoned the process. We didn’t know if it was finished, but we’d had enough. The momentum outside had built to levels we were struggling to control. Rick Rubin was on the phone trying to sign us and WONDERFUL LIFE was becoming a hit on European radio before it had even been released. In Greece, the bootleg was top of the airplay charts! What happened next is a blur. The rising tide had dovetailed with the total breakdown of my relationship at home. I was heartbroken, confused, ecstatic, excited, reckless, relentless. I don’t remember being tired for about 2 years. It was a lot at 23 years old but I was living it alongside my mate and together we felt invincible. As momentum builds, there’s a brief sweet spot when you’re famous to your friends and family but nobody else really cares. A moment of warmth before the white heat hits you and sends you spiralling off course. That was all to come. We had few doubts about the album. It was literally the best we could do. There was nothing left. We thought this was our one and only chance, so we just put everything into it. We loved the music and felt so proud. We were definitely still shellshocked, I can see it on our faces in some videos. Mostly though, we were just excited. I remember at that point feeling like anything was possible.
