Can Spain forget its fascist history? | Foreign Correspondent

During the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona was a stronghold of resistance against far-right general Francisco Franco's push to topple the Republican Government. Then in 1939 Franco took his revenge – jailing, executing or exiling hundreds of thousands of people. A memorial to the victims is located at the Fossar de la Pedrera (Cemetery of the Quarry), in the Montjuïc district of Barcelona. Today, some descendants of Franco’s victims are still searching for closure. It’s a dark and painful history that continues to haunt Spanish society today.
